'Swedish Mausers' are a family of bolt-action rifles based on an improved variant of Mauser's earlier Model 1893, but using the 6.5×55mm cartridge, and incorporating unique design elements as requested by Sweden. These are the m/94 (Model 1894) carbine, m/96 (Model 1896) long rifle, m/38 (Model 1938) short rifle and m/41 (Model 1941) sniper rifle. In 1898 production began at Carl Gustafs. The Swedish Mauser Rifles. Steve Kehaya. And Joe Poyer. It is somewhat ironic that the rifles we in North America know so well as the 'Swedish Mauser' were never called that by the military in Sweden. Swedish Mauser is a term that was first applied to these fine rifles when they reached the surplus arms market. I have disassembled the rifles, and looked over the barrels. The only markings I have on two of them (the rest have nothing but government acceptance marks, proof marks, etc), is one has a small '6.5x55mm' with a 'MVR' between the exposed portion of the receiver and the rear sight assembly under the wood and the other has a very legible '6.5 Swedish' followed by some type of faint.

There are a couple ways that the stock disc can be authenticated and determined to be valid.Rifles fresh from military storage had one of two characteristics:1- grease/cosmoline in every nook & cranny.2- a piece of white tape stuck usually over the comb of the stock with a two digit number, i.e.

79, which indicates it was last inspected in military storage in 1979.Those two tips are strongly suggestive that the rifle hasn't seen any shooting or use since it was imported into the U.S. Rifles from FSR shooting clubs will not have these indicators nor will rifles from private ownership. We do occasionally see rifles with one or both of these characteristics to the point that the observation has been validated repeatedly over the years. Here's a very nice maple stocked m/96 with the grease showing.stock discs:It is true that normally the disc cannot be counted upon anymore to be an accurate reflection of bore size or condition.DutchSwedish Mausers & rolling blocks.
